Computer Shipments in India See 7% Growth in Q2 2024, Driven by Strong Consumer Demand

New Delhi, August 19, 2024: Shipments of personal computers in India, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, reached 3.39 million units in the second quarter of 2024, marking a 7.1% year-on-year growth, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC). The positive trend was observed across all three categories, with desktops, notebooks, and workstations growing by 5.9%, 7.4%, and 12.4% respectively.

The consumer segment showed significant growth, rising by 11.2% year-on-year, driven by strong demand across both online and offline channels. The e-retail segment was particularly robust, posting a growth of 22.4%. The commercial segment also grew by 3.5% year-on-year, driven by increased demand in various sectors.

“This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of growth for the consumer segment,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India and South Asia. He added that back-to-school and college campaigns, along with strong demand during online sales events, contributed significantly to the surge in shipments.

HP Inc. led the market in both the commercial and consumer segments, capturing 33.5% and 29.7% of the market share, respectively. The company also dominated the notebook category with a 34.4% share, thanks to a surge in demand for consumer notebooks and key enterprise orders.

Lenovo secured the second spot, with its shipments growing by 32.7% in the consumer segment and 6.3% in the commercial segment. Dell Technologies ranked third, despite a decline in its commercial desktop category, which saw a 15.9% year-on-year drop due to pricing pressures from competitors in government and enterprise markets. However, Dell saw a 6.4% increase in the consumer segment, benefiting from strong back-to-school campaigns and offline channel growth.

Acer Group showed impressive growth, with a 38.3% increase in shipments, while Asus secured the fifth position with a 5.4% growth, driven by its strong focus on the commercial segment and expanded offline presence.

Looking ahead, IDC’s Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President of Devices Research, expressed optimism for the PC market, noting that the rise of AI PCs and several recent launches are expected to drive demand in the coming months. While AI PCs may not see significant consumer demand in the short term, they are likely to attract gamers and content creators, and are expected to drive commercial orders starting in the third quarter of 2024.
