Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Mahua Moitra is leading in the Krishnanagar constituency of West Bengal with a margin of 60,527 votes against BJP’s Amrita Roy, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI) updates. Moitra, who is aiming for re-election in the seat, previously secured a victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha election with 614,872 votes.
BJP’s Amrita Roy has received 238,294 votes so far. In other constituencies, TMC’s Biplab Mitra holds a commanding lead over BJP’s Sukanta Majumdar by a margin of 186,823 votes in Balurghat. Majumdar, who is the West Bengal BJP Chief, is contesting from this seat but is trailing.
Meanwhile, TMC General Secretary and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, is comfortably ahead in Diamond Harbour, with a significant margin of 431,736 votes.
As of now, TMC is leading in 31 of West Bengal’s 42 constituencies, while BJP is ahead in 10. Congress is leading in one seat. The election also saw simultaneous results for the assembly elections in states such as Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh, alongside the Lok Sabha contest.
In 2019, TMC won 22 seats in the state, while BJP secured 18. Congress had won just 2 seats in the same elections. Strict security measures were put in place for the smooth counting process, which started at 8 AM. The process has involved nearly 70-80 lakh people across more than 8,000 constituencies. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections were conducted in seven phases, with polling for different phases held from April 19 to June 1.
