Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola could potentially succeed Gareth Southgate as the England national football team’s manager after the end of the upcoming season, according to a report by Goal.com. The Football Association (FA) is reportedly considering Guardiola as the top candidate to replace Southgate, whose tenure ended following England’s defeat in the 2024 UEFA Euro final.
Guardiola’s current contract with Manchester City runs until the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season, meaning England could have an interim manager until Guardiola’s appointment, should he agree to take on the national team role.
The 53-year-old Spanish manager had earlier expressed his desire to coach a national team to win major international trophies. In February, Guardiola told ESPN Brasil, “A national team. I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I would like that. I don’t know who would want me! To work for a national team they have to want you, just like a club.”
Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager following their loss to Spain in the 2024 UEFA European Championship final. In his statement, Southgate described managing the England team as the “honour of my life,” but acknowledged it was time for a new chapter. He also praised assistant coach Steve Holland for his exceptional contributions during their years together with the national team.
Should Guardiola take over, the Three Lions would hope for a fresh direction and another chance at glory on the international stage.
