Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has called for a shift toward economic nationalism, urging industries to prioritize local production and reduce reliance on unnecessary imports. Speaking at an event organized by the Swarna Bharat Trust, Dhankhar emphasized the need for industries, trade, and commerce sectors to align with the “Vocal for Local” campaign, which focuses on strengthening domestic industries and curbing the adverse effects of excessive imports.
Dhankhar highlighted the negative impact of imports such as carpets, garments, and toys, pointing out that they drain foreign exchange reserves and undermine domestic entrepreneurship. “Our dependence on imports is not just depleting our foreign exchange, but it is also stifling the growth of Indian entrepreneurship,” he said. The Vice President urged industries to focus on local production to create jobs and foster entrepreneurial growth within the country.
At the event, Dhankhar also stressed the importance of responsible consumption of natural resources, warning against the unsustainable use of resources based on economic power. He explained that excessive resource use, driven by financial strength, could jeopardize the well-being of future generations. “If we waste resources based on financial power, we are putting the future generation at risk,” Dhankhar cautioned.
Additionally, Dhankhar voiced concerns over the export of raw materials like iron ore without value addition. He argued that exporting unprocessed raw materials not only limits job creation but also weakens the national economy. “Exporting iron ore without adding value to it is a missed opportunity for job creation and economic growth,” he stated, urging industries to prioritize long-term national interests over short-term financial gains.
In his speech, Dhankhar emphasized the need for a unified national effort, calling on all sectors to prioritize the welfare of the country above individual or political interests. Quoting a Shloka from the Rig Veda, he urged unity, saying, “Let us move together, let us speak in one voice, and always for the nation.”
Dhankhar also paid tribute to former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, praising his unwavering commitment to public service and his dedication to the welfare of the nation. Reflecting on Naidu’s legacy, Dhankhar said, “His life is dedicated to the welfare of the nation, with an unflinching commitment to ideals, and his heart is in rural India.”
